GST registration: who needs it and how

Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration is the first compliance step for most businesses in India. Some businesses must register based on turnover, others because of the nature of what they do. Here's how to tell whether you need to register and how the process works.

Quick answer

GST registration is mandatory once your turnover crosses the threshold or you fall into a special category. Here's who needs it, when, and how to apply.

1. Turnover-based registration

The most common trigger is turnover. Once your aggregate annual turnover crosses the prescribed threshold, registration becomes mandatory. The threshold is generally higher for suppliers of goods than for suppliers of services, and a few special-category states have lower limits. Because these figures vary by state and by what you supply, confirm the exact threshold that applies to you before assuming you are below it — aggregate turnover is computed across all your business verticals on the same PAN, on an all-India basis.

2. Compulsory registration regardless of turnover

Certain businesses must register even if their turnover is small. These include people making inter-state taxable supplies, those liable to pay tax under reverse charge, casual taxable persons, non-resident taxable persons, agents supplying on behalf of others, and businesses supplying through e-commerce operators. If you fall into one of these categories, the turnover threshold does not protect you — registration is required from the outset.

3. Voluntary registration

You can also register voluntarily even when you are not required to. Many small businesses do this so they can claim input tax credit on their purchases and issue tax invoices that larger customers expect. The trade-off is that once registered, you must file returns and meet all compliance obligations on time, even in months with no activity. Weigh the credit and credibility benefits against the ongoing filing burden.

4. The registration process

Registration is done online on the GST portal. You submit your PAN, proof of business and address, bank details and authorised-signatory details, and complete identity verification. Once approved, you receive a GSTIN — a state-specific PAN-based identification number. If you operate in more than one state, you generally need a separate registration for each state from which you make supplies.

5. After you are registered

Registration is the beginning, not the end. You must display your GSTIN, issue compliant tax invoices, charge the correct tax, and file periodic returns. Keep your registration details current — changes to address, partners or business activity must be updated. Failing to register when required, or not complying after registering, can attract penalties and interest, so get the timing right.

Common questions

1When do I have to register for GST?

Once your aggregate turnover crosses the applicable threshold, or immediately if you fall into a compulsory-registration category such as making inter-state supplies or selling through e-commerce. The threshold differs for goods and services and by state, so confirm the figure that applies to you.

2Can I register for GST voluntarily?

Yes — you can register even if you are below the threshold. This lets you claim input tax credit and issue tax invoices, but it also commits you to filing returns and meeting all compliance obligations on time.

3Do I need separate registrations for different states?

Generally yes — GST registration is state-specific. If you make supplies from more than one state, you typically need a separate registration and GSTIN for each, even though they are all linked to the same PAN.
